Healthy Aging From the Inside Out
September is Healthy Aging Month, and we’d like to use it to start a conversation about something we care deeply about:
How do we not simply live longer, but stay healthier as we age?
You may have heard people talking about longevity medicine, biological age, or even the 12 Hallmarks of Aging.
And we’ll admit it.
Terms like mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, dysbiosis, and stem cell exhaustion don’t exactly make healthy aging sound very approachable.
They can also sound like things you need a medical degree to understand.
But the basic idea is actually pretty simple.
Your Body Ages in Many Different Ways
Researchers have identified a number of interconnected biological processes that tend to change as we age. Collectively, these are known as the 12 Hallmarks of Aging.
They include things like:
- Changes in how well our mitochondria produce energy
- Chronic, low-grade inflammation
- Changes in our gut microbiome
- A decline in the body’s ability to repair and renew itself
- Cellular damage and changes in how our genes are regulated
- Changes in metabolism and nutrient sensing
- A buildup of older or damaged cells
- Declining stem cell function
- Changes in communication between cells
The scientific names may be complicated.
What they tell us is not.
Aging does not happen in just one place.
Your brain does not age independently of your heart. Your muscles are not separate from your metabolism. Your hormones affect your bones, brain, cardiovascular system, and more. Your gut communicates with your immune system. Sleep affects metabolic health. Nutrition affects cellular function. Movement influences everything from muscle and bone health to insulin sensitivity and cognition.
It is all connected. Longevity Medicine Is Whole-Person Medicine
That is exactly why we believe longevity medicine, at its best, is holistic medicine.
You cannot meaningfully talk about healthy aging without talking about: Brain health. Heart health. Bone health. Muscle. Hormones. Metabolism. Gut health. Immune health. Nutrition. Movement. Sleep. Stress.
Rather than chasing one “anti-aging” solution, at Zuma Wellness, we are interested in understanding the health of the whole person and identifying the areas where your body may need more support.
Because longevity is not simply about adding years to your life.
It is about supporting your health, resilience, independence, and quality of life during those years.
Can We Measure How We’re Aging?
This is where some of the newer tools in longevity medicine become especially interesting.
One test we offer is TruAge + TruHealth, an epigenetic test that looks at patterns in DNA methylation to provide another window into how your body is aging biologically, not simply how many birthdays you have had.
The report includes information about your biological age, pace of aging, and aging patterns across multiple organ systems, along with additional longevity-related markers.
We can then look at those results in the context of the bigger picture: your health history, symptoms, lifestyle, nutrition, labs, goals, and the other information we use in your care.
For Healthy Aging Month, we’re currently offering our TruAge + TruHealth Test + a Healthy Aging Consultation for $650 (normally $1,345).
During your consultation, we’ll help you understand your results and discuss what they may mean in the context of your overall health and healthy-aging goals.
